There is absolutely no question what will dominate news coverage today: His name is Tiger Woods.

A plane crashed into a building yesterday and all anyone could talk about was Woods. By the way, in case you haven't had a chance to read more about the man who flew his plane into an IRS building in Austin, see below.

But back to Woods.

In my time in media, I am not sure I've seen a story sensationalized like this. First it was one woman, then three, five, eight, ten and pretty soon he'll be running his on brothel. Amazingly, as far as anyone can tell, it's all mostly true, which would be an amazing victory for reality over perception.

When Woods ran his SUV into a tree and a fire hydrant, things had yet to go badly for him. No, his world turned upside down when his wife, Elin, smashed a driver into his back window, touching off a series of question that no one wanted to answer, but that became one of the more devastating stories in sports history.

Tiger Woods, womanizer, adulterer, failed family man. Words no one ever thought would be associated with the world's greatest and most beloved athlete.

Today, Tiger speaks up, at an 11 am press conference, for the first time since that night. Several athletes pledged their support to ESPN:

Real devastation, however, does not come when a golfer, no matter his social influence or stature, cheats on his wife. Devastation is catastrophe, poverty, hunger, disaster, terrorism. Yesterday an Austin man, apparently fed up with many things, set his house on fire, before crashing his plane into an IRS building in the Texas city.

That could have been devastation. I say could have been because it appears that only one person other than the pilot died. Look at photos of the building, that is nothing short of a miracle.
The plane apparently crashed with nearly a full tank of gas, about an hour after firefighters were called to a blaze at the man's home. The man wrote a lengthy, and rather painful to read, note detailing his frustration.

I read the entire note yesterday. When finished, I turned to a co-worker and said, "this is going to be a much bigger deal than it is today." My prediction came true about an hour later, when the debate started over whether to call this terrorism or not. Then the debate continued over whether he was conservative or liberal, noting his frustration with taxation, but sympathy with communism.

None of that actually matters, but it will be the biggest story. Who's fault is this, big government or those damned conservatives.

None of it matters. This man was frustrated with the way his life was going and he blamed it on government. The government may very well share some blame. But no elected official flew a plane into a building.

I'm guessing that this weekend I'll write more on this, somewhere at least. That note really struck me. The guy basically called himself a martyr. In this case, for hopefully the only time in my life, I agree with Glenn Beck. He wasn't a martyr. He's a killer.
