Happy Sunday all.
Turns out DC isn't just heat and humidity as it has been raining for about the past 24 hours. Pretty intense lightning storm last night as we were on the way home from Georgetown. Now, those of you who got 2 AM calls from me last night will know already that we went to a pretty awesome bar. It was packed with a guy right in the middle playing a piano and singing. We requested a bunch of songs, which was actually pretty easy. He played Carolina In My Mind. He went through the list of "college" songs. But, an ode to Jimmy, I convinced him to play Rocky Top. The bar went nuts when he did.
Those of you who live in the east or south will know all about this, but one of the really different things out here are the bars. A lot of them are outdoors. Most have patios or rooftops. Having a beer deep inside a basement is what we are used to being from Seattle. But out here you can spend a lot of time outside. That's pretty awesome if you ask me. Also, someone mentioned the fact that guys actually have to dress a little to go out. Not like a lot of places in the west where I've gone in basketball shorts and a t-shirt. Just a cultural difference.
Some of you are facebook friends of mine so you saw this update, but I got a new office on Friday. Corner office on the 8th floor. It's actually pretty crazy. Big office. Huge desk. Don't really know how it happened. See the picture up top. Get the feeling I'll spending a lot of time in it since it's recess again, this time for about a month.
On the subject of the job, I am beginning to flush out what I want to do after I'm done at LCV. There's a guy on our staff who runs the campaigns. For about nine years he just traveled around the country as a field organizer, working for LCV or others. I would absolutely love to do that. And now he runs campaigns from the national chapter in DC. Great place to end up. I'll be having coffee with him to learn some more and then hopefully get connected in Virginia for a bit before my lease runs out and I can move toward congressional campaigns next summer. There are a couple big ones in Virginia too that are going to hinge on ACES. So things are pretty exciting.
Still trying to come back to Seattle for labor day, but we'll see if that works out.
A few links that have gotten my attention:
Excellent column from The State (main newspaper in SC). This is the paper that had nothing but Mark Sanford coverage for weeks. Pay attention to the very last line and think of my life story. This is why I do what I do.
I give Funny People good reviews. Thought it was hilarious.
If you have Twitter, both follow me, and go here to help us get Obama's energy plan on Oprah.
Pretty incredible story about lobby groups that posed as a minority group in sending letters to Rep. Perriello (D - VA) against the ACES bill. Full disclosure: this is an LCV blog.
Now excuse me, I need to get back to the Law and Order SVU marathon. Love Sundays.
The other picture at the top happened just down the street from our apartment. It's hard to make out, but the car on the right is up on the power line that goes from the pole into the ground. Looked like everyone was alright. We walked out of the house right after it happened and within minutes there were about 10 police cars and 5 or 6 fire trucks/aid cars on site.
Stay classy.
